My friend Kate had a mama conundrum. A big old dangerous fireplace and a curious toddler.
After living like this

this for a little while she could take no more!
So during nap time she got a wild hair, and created the ultimate solution to this age old problem.
She covered the fireplace with a magnetic chalkboard!

I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this!
I am giving you the biggest GO LADY Kate!

Love ya girl!!! Thanks for finding me the inspiration!!
What a brilliant fix! Love!
What a wonderful idea! I currently have that same gate but it goes all around the tv, etc. big eyesore in living room. How did you make/where did you purchase?
Can you email me? Thanks!
I would also love to know how you did this!
What an improvement! Terrific idea.
Thanks so much for your great comments.
My friend Kate did this project and here is a little bit about how she went about it.
She had plywood cut at HomeDepot to fit over the opening of her fireplace. Paint Plywood with several coats of magnetic paint, then paint Plywood with a few coats of chalkboard paint.
From here she affixed the Plywood to her Metal Fireplace frame with industrial strength magnets AND screws (her hubby put the screws directly into the metal at the top and bottom of the plywood.
She plans to get the fireplace in tip top shape and use it again when her babe is older.
Hope that answers some of your questions! Thanks for stopping by PGZ Blog!

I'm happy to answer more questions for you to make your fireplace a safe and happy playspace!
I love it! and so does my son!
Question for Kate -- where did you get the patterned magnetic letters? I've been looking for a set for my kids for a while now & can't find anything even remotely close.
What an amazing idea! I love it! I see where the plywood is bu ti am just wondering what the area was around the plywood that she painted black is... ??? I'm just a litle confused. I really want to do this for my house as I think it looks amazing! ThankS!!
I did this! I hated our fireplace and have a 5 month old. I wanted to do something to keep him out of it once he was old enough to want to crawl around in it. I googled "fireplace cover" or something and was directed to to a page that eventually directed me here. I pinned it on Pinterest and then built my own! It's such a great idea! Thank you!
My children are grown but I have 2 naughty kitties who love to play in the ashes in the fireplace. This is a great option for them too!!! Thanks!
